Mouth-To-Mouth Saves Squirrel

Quick-thinking fireman Dave Shaw saved a baby squirrel after it fell out of a tree - by giving it the kiss of life.

The helpless two-week-old creature was found dying on the pavement by two youngsters, who carried it to to the local hospital in Crawley,Sussex, where Dave and his colleagues were on a routine call.

Dave took the tiny bald creature and gently blew into its nose to revive revive it.

The Crawley fireman said "We rang the RSPCA first to find out what to do and they just told us to go to the nearest vet.

"I blew on its nose while we drove to the vet's to make sure it stayed alive.

At the vets in Southgate the squirrel was checked for injuries and fed some milk.

Vet Julia Harrison said "It had not opened its eyes which indicates she is very young.

"It will need to be fed goat's milk every three hours until it gets its strength back."

The squirrel - which has been named Madge - was later taken to a wildlife sanctuary, where it will be hand-reared for three weeks.

Julia added "We get quite a few cases where baby squirrels have fallen out of trees, but they rarely reach us alive."

Sanctuary assistant Liz Valence said it would spend the rest of its life in captivity.

"We keep squirrels here at the sanctuary after they have been reared because it is illegal to let squirrels out in the wild - it will stay in an aviary."
