Navvies Stray From Straight And Narrow
Council navvies who are coining up to £50,000 a year each are to be sent back to school to learn how to paint white lines properly!
The men have been suspended after complaints about poor workmanship, including "unstraight and skinny" white line road markings.
The discoveries were made by one of the cost cutting committees at an England city council.
Councillors have ordered the men to attend a special college course for 'road marking operatives' after inspecting a newly-laid stretch of road in the city.
They criticised both the quality of the surface and the straightness and thickness of the white lines.
The white line men were suspended for several days until a proper system of work supervision was introduced this week.
Assistant transport director Neil Dancer told the scrutiny panel that a lack of proper training was to blame for the sub-standard work.
"The men have no practical qualifications" he told chairman Coun Mike Olley.
"We have found a course with a syllabus for road marking operatives and we are determined to get them on it.
"We are going to look at this organisation from start to finish."
Tory spokesman John Hood said he was amazed the men had been painting white lines for years without any proper training.
"Granted,it is not a particularly difficult job,but it is no wonder the city's road network is in such a mess."
Three white lines gangs have been placed under a close-supervision order for twelve weeks.
