Farmer's Wife Sets-Up Cow Crossing
Farmer Iris Green has found a unique way of making sure her cows can get to the udder side - she dresses up as a lollipop lady.
The mum-of-three wears a fluorescent jacket and has even made herself a little lollipop ladies' stick bearing a sign and a picture of a cow for the bizarre twice-daily patrol.
Motorists are becoming accustomed to
seeing Mrs Green standing in the middle of the road as her
husband, farmer Bob,ushers their 80 cows across the road.
Mrs Green said "The road is getting busier and busier and I remember one time there was an incident in which a motorist tried to overtake the herd and ended up hitting a cow.
"My friend's husband and son eventually designed the stick and a policeman felt sorry for me and gave me a fluorescent police jacket to wear.
"Now every morning and evening I stop the traffic while the cows cross. Most people who use that road are used to my antics now."
Mrs Green said that 20 years ago she and her husband could move the cows from field to field without any problem but as more houses were built the traffic got worse.
"At one point I had to take to going into the road with a walking stick to stop cars but I think people thought I was a bit mad.
"I feel much safer with lollipop stick and coat.I think I must be the only farmer's wife to go to such lengths to get them crossed safely."
