Rare Jaguar Car In US Auction
A Jaguar car built in Coventry is expected to fetch almost £1million at an auction in America next month.
The blue 1955 classic D-type sports car will go under the hammer on August 20 at Pebble Beach,California.
One of only 69 ever made,it is likely to
cost the buyer at least $1.2million...that's about £800,000.
The D-type was designed solely for racing and is regarded as one of the definitive British sports racing cars of the 1950s.
Bidders from all over the world are expected at the auction, which will be the first to be broadcast live over the Internet.
The car was shipped on December 16,1955to an American east coast Jaguar distributor.
It had an active racing career and won the Watkins Glen Grand Prix in New York a year later, driven by George Constantine.
Auctioneers' spokeswoman Catherine Einhaus said "It is highly desirable as these important sports cars can be road-rallied or raced with considerable success."
Jaguar spokesman Colin Cook said "Coventry-built D-types are among the most collectable and valuable of all historic racing cars.
"They were built in very limited numbers at Browns Lane and are recognised as one of the most successful sports racing cars if their generation."
